The Courtyard
The demolition of the link between buildings 4 and 5
allows a 18m wide courtyard to be formed on the 1st floor.
The demolition of the building gives us the opportunity
to design 2 new elevations, distinct in character from the
existing factory building. It also allows the opportunity to
provide the apartments on the upper levels with private
balconies.
At the level of the courtyard the area is split into private
gardens adjacent to the flats and a communal garden.
We are proposing that this communal garden contains
a series of small allotment plots in large raised planters.
Rather than a landscaped garden that may not be used
it is proposed that the residents of the chocolate factory
can rent a “micro-allotment”, allowing keen gardeners
that live in flats the opportunity to grow vegetables and
flowers. We also believe that this would bring activity to
the courtyard and develop a sense of community.
