The Square
We propose to form a new square that will be the active
hub of the scheme. This square is formed from Building
5, the Reception Building and a new building to the
east. Our aim is for this space to be a destination for the
Greenbank community and attract the public from the
cycle path. The square will have pedestrian access from
the Corner of Co-operation Road and Turley Road and the
cycle path.
As the heart of the scheme, we would locate active B1
and A1/A3 uses around the square such as bar/cafe, cycle
shop, chocolate maker.
The Reception Building will have a bar/cafe with flexible
community space on the 1st floor similar to the Tobacco
Factory and contain such uses as bar, restaurant, art gallery,
performance space and community space for workshops,
creches etc.
The landscaping to the square would be allow for tables
and chairs to be set out and the potential for a weekly
market. Due to the level change we have shown steps
leading down to the rear of the Reception Building that
will form an informal amphitheatre/ performance space.
Although primarily urban in nature the square will be
greened with planters and trees that form informal play
spaces.
Since the previous exhibition the tower has moved
from the rear of building 2, reduced in size and
relocated to the junction between the cycle path and
the square. The “Cycle Dock” is a landmark on the
cycle path and signifies the entrance to the Square.
At the lower level, the level of the square, it houses
a cycle shop (hire, maintenance and storage) and
an energy centre with the CHP boiler and recycling
facilities. At the upper level, the level of the cycle
path, there is a cafe, that is accessed directly
from the cycle path with a terrace overlooking the
square. The building has 4/5 storeys of residential
apartments above the cafe. This is approx the height
of building 5 and will form a beacon on the cycle
path.
