Location / Connections

The Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory is located in Greenbank, a suburb in East Bristol, around 2 miles from the city centre. The site is within a mile of two junctions on the M32 for easy access to the national road network. It is also adjacent to the Bristol and Bath Cycle Path, used by many commuters, and within 2 miles from Bristol Temple Meads railway station.

Amenities and uses

A late Victorian suburb, the Greenbank area is predominantly of residential terraced houses with pockets of employment use. The site is extremely close to a large range of Open Space, and is within a five minute walk of two primary schools and a number of community amenities such as churches and libraries. The main shopping street is a 5 - 10 minute walk, with only a few retail outlets nearby.

Socio-economic

Greenbank is a vibrant multi-cultural community. In its hay-day The Chocolate Factory employed upwards of 1000 workers but the scale of production in the factory had been downsizing for a number of years. Two years ago, with only a quarter of the factory being fully utilised, the decision was made to close the Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory with the loss of 350 jobs.
